TOPIC – PFAS: FROM THE BATHROOM TO THE LAB ROOM

PFAS are a concern in both everyday life and environmental work. Personal care products such as cosmetics, soaps, and lotions can be potential sources of exposure, while products used in the field may raise questions about cross contamination during sampling.

This virtual discussion will begin with a plain-language explanation of PFAS, where they are commonly found, and what is known about their potential health effects. Panelists will share how they evaluate personal care products, which alternatives they have found useful, and the steps they take to reduce their own exposure.

The conversation will then move from the bathroom to the lab room. Speakers will discuss how products containing PFAS may affect sampling work and how environmental professionals can limit cross contamination when handling samples and equipment. The panel will also consider government action on PFAS in consumer products, including developments in California, Maine, and Minnesota and the status of efforts in New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania.

They will discuss:

  • What PFAS are and where they are commonly found
  • Personal care products that may contain PFAS and how to assess alternatives
  • Practical ways to reduce personal exposure
  • Whether products used before or during fieldwork can contribute to cross contamination
  • Steps to protect samples and equipment during environmental work
  • Current and emerging efforts to address PFAS in consumer products
